Summary: | unique keylock wiregate |
Description & Commentary: | By using a two-part gate, Camp created a keylock carabiner with the gate feel of a wiregate. A small piece of aluminum is swaged onto the bent wiregate. This keyway in this piece interfaces with the carabiner nose in the same way as a traditional keylock. Because this does not require a hooded nose as seen with the Wild Country Helium or Black Diamond Hoodwire, the slim nose fits more easily into bolt hangers or can be slid through tight fabric channels such as quickdraws - although it does lack the safety benefits of a guarded/hooded nose. Unlike the twisted wiregate DMM Shield, the Camp Dyon maintains the easy-clipping flat front of a traditional wiregate. The Dyon is well sized for its weight, although not the lightest on the market. The swept spine feels secure when using a pinch-clip method, despite the overall thin feel of the carabiner body. Overall, this is a hard carabiner to fault - perhaps the lack of a relief hole in the gate keyway means it can get packed with ice/debris, but the keyway is overall much shallower than traditional keygate carabiners. The Dyon has one of the highest MSRPs for a non-locking carabiner. |
