Summary: | gated captive end, fine threading |
Description & Commentary: | A workhorse belay carabiner for modern compact gear. The thin, wide profile feels a bit strange, as does the narrow shape. A textured anodized surface provides good purchase, and the gate threading exhibits the typical Metolius fine (and smooth) threading. The stiff internal wiregate forms a sizable captive end which is easy to access. The fine threading is well liked by some climbers due to the additional security against accidental unlocks (almost 4 full rotations required to unlock!) but hated by others due to the slow operation. The sharp bend and wide corner (almost 16mm from across) keep most small round hole mechanical devices from migrating down the spine. The locking sleeve is 16.5mm in diameter (including the knurling) and the internal wiregate can be passed by something with at least a 12.4mm x 18mm attachment hole if the device can pass through the 9.3mm gate opening of the internal wiregate. For example, the Petzl Rig and Petzl Stop) descenders will fit into the small captive section, but the Troll Pro Allp Tech would not, due to the large attachment post at the bottom of the device. Overall a good captive-end carabiner well suited to the modern top rope or gym climber, and offered at an affordable price. |
