Summary: | inexpensive basic carabiner, flat-spun rivets may have issues |
Description & Commentary: | A basic bent gate asym'D for use in quickdraws. Omega Pacific produced budget carabiners, and the classic line was the budget tier of a budget brand. The Bent gate makes for a larger gate opening and easier clipping of the rope when used on a quickdraw. Like other OP carabiners, the Classic uses flat-spun rivets, which are almost flush with the gate. They have sharp edges which catch and pull on the fibers of soft goods - very annoying. On a personal note, I purchased a set of 5 (or maybe 6) new Omega Pac Classics quick draws around 2003 to flesh out my rock climbing rack for longer routes. Upon arrival, I noticed 2 carabiners had loose rivets which had moved out of position. How these made it through QC and into the hands of a customer, I have no idea. I did get mine replaced (and upgraded to the much nicer JCs), but never saw a recall for the batch. I acquired this set of Classics to remind me of this issue. |
