Summary: | classic HMS with offset gate in twist lock |
Description & Commentary: | A classic HMS shaped carabiner. The offset gate & S-spine shape provide a large gate opening (and easier handling) which combined with the large basket and barstock made this a popular carabiner for many years - although polarizing for it's overall build quality. As with many Omega Pacific carabiners, the gate spring of this example is weak. In my experience on ropes courses I've seen the Jake carabiner gate springs wear out at a rate much faster than Black Diamond or Petzl carabiners - often self-ejecting at some point. Interestingly, Royal Robbins comments on offset gates in this 1995 interview with John Martin Meek at the ACC Annual meeting. See the related Omega Pacific Jake Screw-Lok and REI HMS Screwgate as well as the more modern Omega Pacific Jake Keylock Screw Lock. |
