Summary: | proprietary reverse keylock (Simond monobloc) |
Description & Commentary: | Introduced in 1998, Spider uses a unique snagless reverse-keylock type design Simond calls the monobloc system. The recessed interior pocket in the nose of the carabiner catches the gate lug to prevent the gate from opening under load. See the patent for drawings of the monobloc gate latch. Because the body of the Spider does not taper at the nose, the nose acts as an effective guard accidental opening. Unlike this straight gate version, my bent-gate example has a window in the front of the nose, which should help with removing snow and debris. It probably also makes manufacturing easier rather than the blind hole found on the straight gate. |
