| Description & Commentary: | This may look like a basic aluminum snaphook sized for large connections like scaffolding and ladders, but also sports a gate rated to 16kN for minor axis, inward (gate face), and side loading. The gate is supported at the nose against minor axis (transverse/outwards) and side loading by overlapping with the nose of the hook. Unlike a true carabiner, the gate does not intereface with a latch (e.g. notch & pin or keylock) which supports the body of the connector during major axis loading. For loading against the gate face, as found in a potential connector roll-out, the FS 64 blocks the gate opening with a limiting pin which is well supported by the sides of the U-shaped lock lever. This particular version came with a work positioning lanyard which has the FS 64 ALU permanently attached to a rope with a sewn splice, and uses the Lory Pro for adjustment. Skylotec explicitly lists 30 years as a maximum lifespan for the connector, which seems both long and short. The color is listed on the Skylotec website as silver and polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which appears to be an error, as this is a type of plastic. Interestingly, the body of the connector appears slightly larger on one side than the other, most noticable when looking directly head-on at the nose. |
