Summary:REI carabiner with dot-peened markings on the gate, bright purple anodization
Description & Commentary:

A basic '90s workhorse carabiner. The gate has flat spots so the rivet edges sit flush - and won't snag fibers on soft goods. Unusually for the time, each carabiner is marked with a unique serial number rather than just a batch code. The markings are dot-peened (think dot-matrix printer for metal) on the gate - also uncommon.

Despite the name, REI offered this in BLACK, BLUE, BRIGHT (silver), GREEN, PURPLE colors. I think this was the second generation version - it has a higher strength rating than the other Gold D (flat-nose) I have. The body is slightly different as well, with the differences most notable in the nose shape and on the hinge-relief area of the carabiner.

This model was produced by MSR for REI, which owned MSR from 1981-2001. The rivet flats and individual serial numbers are also found the MSR I-biners.
