Description & Commentary: | This design is one of the earlier twistlock carabiners, in an HMS shaped carabiner. Clog produced the first twistlock carabiners, with advertisments appearing in 1983. These ads show drawings of an asymmetric D carabiner with a sleeve design using diagonal knurling and a 90 degree throw, whereas this example has a 90 degree throw but straight knurling in an HMS shape. As of July 2023, I have not seen an HMS style twistlock carabiner from Clog with diagonal knurling. See also: Clog Twistlock D's with straight knurling and 90 degree throw or 120 degree throw. As with most modern autolockers, the hinge pin includes a lug to guide the locking mechanism. Notably, this is much larger diameter than found these days. The overall size is larger than most modern HMS carabiners as well. This example of the Clog HMS twistlock lacks the batch marking found on the Climb-High version. |
